State pushes for global certification in fisheries sector

Thiruvananthapuram: State fisheries secretary B Abdul Nasar stressed the urgent need for sustainable practices in the fisheries sector amid challenges like climate change and declining fish stocks. Speaking at a workshop for govt officials, he highlighted the state's commitment to securing marine stewardship council (MSC) certification, which would enhance the global competitiveness of India's seafood exports and ensure marine resource sustainability.

Nasar stressed that the fisheries department will implement research-backed management measures to promote sustainable fishing. "The certification would benefit all stakeholders, from fishers to exporters, while preserving marine biodiversity," he said. He warned that dwindling fish catches and climate change impacts threaten livelihoods, making sustainable practices essential.

Sunil Mohamed, former CMFRI scientist, echoed concerns, noting a sharp decline in shrimp, squid, and other species, disrupting the seafood supply chain. He pointed out that MSC certification could restore fish stocks and ensure the sector's long-term health.
